The Ultimate Kit List continued – our (infamous and fabulous) bikes…

These kit list titles are tongue-in-cheek you know that right?! Although, having said that, it is a biggie this one: You’re going on a cycling adventure? You’re going to want a bike that’s right for you. Here’s what works for us, it may work for you too or at least give you a good starting point. We looked at MANY (too many?) set ups and finally decided on Surly Trolls because of their versatility. You can put anything on these bad boys – which suits us juuust dandy. We got ours (and LOADS of support and advice to boot) from the fabulous Strada Cycles in Bristol. Thanks Mike.

If you want to see the rest of the kit we’ve got with us, look here.

Matt’s Bike:
Surly Troll medium frame
Shimano Deore 9-speed running gear
Dura-ace thumb-shifters on sunrace flat-bar mounts
Aluminium flat bars and bar ends
Brooks Swift saddle
Tubus pannier racks (front and back)
Mirror, bar-end mounted. Totally essential, a major safety device! Can’t imagine touring without it

Zoe’s bike:
Surly Troll small frame
Shimano Deore 9-speed running gear
Dura-ace thumb-shifters on sunrace flat-bar mounts
Aluminium flat bars and bar ends
Brooks B17 Imperial saddle
Tubus pannier rack (rear)
Salsa Anything cages (front) and straps – not the straps that came with them, they were ruuuuuubish

Both bikes have:
26 inch wheels with HOPE Pro 4 hubs
Ryde Andra rims with carbide supersonic coated rims – oooOOOOOooooooo, fancy!
Shimano long-drop rim brakes
Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 2inch tyres – a slightly long story, but we rode 1.5 inch tyres across the States, then swapped to 2 inch….they have coped well with dirt roads, cobbles, tarmac and all sorts in Mexico and Central America, and we may go up to something closer to 3 inch in the Andes, where longer periods on dirt beckon…
Double-sided pedals – great if you’re popping down the road in flip flops 😉
Bells – absolutely essential!

  2. Hey up chipmumf 🙂 no sketchy moments, brakes are a little slow to act in the wet though this might just be rim brakes on a hefty bike…wheels so far have been completely great, they’re true after 13000k, braking surface looks pretty much good as new, hubs are smooth as silk….pleased with these particular kit choices!
